GRP PIPES FIND APPLICATION IN POTABLE WATER SUPPLY PROJECT IN INDIA

Lalit Polymers & Electronics Ltd (LPEL), a GRP pipe and tank manufacturing company in India with Italian Collaboration has bagged the first potable water supply project using GRP pipes in India. The project is a turnkey contract involving supply, laying and jointing of 18 kilometers of GRP piping for distribution of potable water from the water treatment plant to the nearby towns and villages.

LPEL has its plant situated on the outskirts of Pune, with it’s works equipped with one of the most modern state of the art microprocessor controlled filament winder,to manufacture GRP pipes ranging in diameter from 150mm to 4000mm,in maximum of 12 metre lengths and has an installed capacity of 5000M Tonnes per annum. All the effort, care and continuous extension of research which have been a characteristic of every moment in the life of the Company have produced the result that LPEL today is one of the few in the country capable of manufacturing GRP pipes as large as 4000mm in dia. This dedicated effort has resulted in the company receiving one of India’s longest GRP pure drinking water pipe line project.

The pipes are being manufactured conforming to IS standards. The process used is that of helical winding, the pipes being supplied in 12 meter lengths with integral bell & spigot joint.

Though GRP pipes havent yet been a success in the country, the prospects seem to be bright with water boards willing to pay a marginal additional price and opting for GRP as compared to conventional materials such as asbestos, steel etc.

The composite industry in India will therefore have to wait and see whether GRP pipes are able to break the myth of steel being stronger than plastic and be used in a much bigger scale.
